Stealth Route

Block out for a Cover Shooter

setting: in a dystopian future London.

The intent for this block out was to create a medium-sized explorable combat space within an easily recognisable landmark.

  • High Level Shape - Square

  • Goal - Fight/Sneak into enemy controlled territory, access server data, escape.

  • Start and End Points are diagonally opposing.

  • The Tower - First thing the player sees as they Exit the safe house from either route is the Tower in the distance - this is framed for the player to give them an orientation point, as well as a physical goal to head towards.

  • Illusion of Choice - Exiting from the main entry/exit of the safehouse the player is given the incentive to explore instead of taking the direct route across the bridge as they may discover alternative ways to cross.

    • This also allows the player to take the chance to explore and receive rewards in the form of health/ammo and other potential collectibles within the space.

    • Ultimately, there is only two routes across the water. The bridge, or using the abandoned barges and piers under the bridge.

  • Geo - The geometry is designed to allow the player to see multiple avenues to move down as they progress, it also is designed in a way to provide natural forms of cover and occlusion to the player but also Line of Sight (LoS) blockers for enemies.

  • Cover - there is a variety of cover for the player to make use of throughout the level.

    • Walls of varying heights

    • Benches

    • Vehicles - Cars and Buses

    • Barriers - erected barriers made by the enemy forces

  • Lighting - Lighting is used to guide the player to continue forward momentum, players generally tend to subconsciously move towards light sources when playing games.

  • Enemy Types - there is a mixture of enemies to provide a mixture of challenge to the player

    • Shotgun Enemy for close range combat

    • Assault Rifle Enemy to provide mid to long range combat

    • Sniper Enemy to provide long range combat

  • Once the player fights their way to the server, they must hack the device by interacting with it, once this occurs it alerts enemy reinforcements waves the player must defeat in order to escape.
